The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act was signed into law on December 22, 2017. Some provisions apply now. Some apply in 2018 and some have delayed effective dates. This course provides an extensive review of provisions in the Act and also identifies proposals that got left on the cutting room floor of the conference committee. Many of the things you worried about were not enacted and those will be identified. The course will dive into the new, complex rules for the reduced tax rate for certain pass-through entities and help you identify those that will and will not qualify. Marginal tax rates go down but not for everyone. See who gets caught by bracket shift. There are no more like kind exchanges of personal property including trade-ins but there is 100% expensing. There are also a host of temporary changes affecting individuals including higher exemptions from the AMT, capping of the state and local tax deduction, elimination of investment expenses, elimination of employee business expenses and loss of personal exemptions. Businesses will need to deal with the loss of business entertainment expenses and loss of some deductions. You have planning options for the next year in connection with alimony. C Corporations were generally big winners with a permanent flat 21% tax rate, elimination of the corporate AMT, refundability of unused AMT credits over time and a move to a territorial tax system with respect to foreign income. Personal service corporations get the 21% rate. All this and a whole lot more!
