Barry Melancon, CPA, CGMA, president and CEO of AICPA, discussed the changing landscape of the accounting profession and how CPAs can respond, adapt and grow. Through the use of technology, attendees were able to submit questions for Melancon to address following his presentation.

Next, attendees watched a video of TXCPA highlights and enjoyed a town hall presentation from Parker and Testa, moderated by Chairman-elect Jerry Spence, CPA – Corpus Christi. Attendees also received copies of the 2018-2019 Year in Review.

The financial report and budget were presented by Immediate Past Treasurer Ben Simiskey, CPA – Houston, PFS, CFP®, Treasurer Billy Kelley, CPA – Permian Basin, CGMA, and TXCPA CFO Steve Phillips, CPA – Fort Worth, CGMA. The board approved both the Society and CPE Foundation budgets for 2019-2020.

Scott Steinberg, president and CEO of BIZDEV, wrapped up the first day of meetings with a presentation on leading with innovation. He shared examples of ways companies have innovated their products and services to be responsive to market needs and changing consumers.

After a day of learning and connecting, attendees enjoyed the Pass a Good Time with TXCPA dinner and party that evening. From photo booth fun to line dancing, members enjoyed time to relax and unwind with colleagues from across the state.

Saturday morning kicked off with a thoughtful presentation and discussion on how to best position the profession to attract the next generation of CPAs with Anu Varadharajan, lecturer from Tulane University. Varadharajan encouraged members to tell their stories and share the many positive benefits a CPA credential and career bring.

Attendees then participated in roundtable discussions to provide feedback on AICPA’s and NASBA’s CPA Evolution. Gathered feedback will be reviewed by the TXCPA Executive Board and shared with AICPA and NASBA as they explore ways to develop a new licensure model for the CPA profession. Individuals may also provide feedback here by August 9.

The meeting ended with business reports from the TXCPA CPA-PAC, CPE Foundation, Peer Assistance Foundation and Accounting Education Foundation, followed by an open forum where members again utilized the technology platform to submit questions for discussion.

TXCPA thanks our generous sponsors, informative speakers and enthusiastic attendees for another wonderful Annual Meeting of Members! We look forward to seeing you in Houston for our Midyear Board of Directors and Members Meeting in January 2020.
