Students Learn Hard Truths
CPA Demonstrates Need for College Education
(City, State) - (Name of school here) students today learned the differences between minimum wage and the type of salary a college education can provide. Through an awareness project developed by the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants (TSCPA), students explored the financial resources required to purchase things like a home or a new automobile and discussed ways to achieve their financial goals.
In the demonstration, (full name of presenter) of (name of company) showed the students that the costs associated with living on their own were much higher than most of them realized. Students selected the type of home and car that they would like to have and whether they plan to have children. They also decided whether they would buy new clothes and go out with their friends. After illustrating the actual costs associated with electric, water, telephone, cable and grocery bills, not to mention the cost of raising a child, (last name of presenter) allowed the students to discuss their own conclusions about the realities of their budget.
As part of the presentation, (last name of the presenter) also spoke to the students about accounting as a career option.
"We try to spark the imaginations of the students by encouraging them to think creatively while making career goals," (last name of presenter) said. (He/She) also stressed that accounting, like many degreed professions, has more opportunities than students realize. -more-

"Every type of business needs accountants," (last name of presenter) said. "Earning their college degree in accounting will give students a wide range of career options."
The presentation at (school) is part of a Texas-wide effort by CPAs to encourage high school students to make the choice to obtain a college degree and work toward the career goal of their choice. In addition to demonstrating the benefits of accounting careers, the presentation stressed the importance of obtaining a college education.
The students and school were provided career reference materials, including a career guide developed specifically for Texas students. The guide contains information about Texas colleges and universities, financial aid and college coursework and outlines the steps to becoming a CPA in Texas. TSCPA is a nonprofit, voluntary professional organization representing Texas CPAs. With a membership of 27,000 and a history of over 85 years, the society has one of the largest in-state memberships of any CPA organization in the nation. The society promotes professionalism, ethics, and integrity among CPAs, and is committed to protecting the interests of the public and its members.
