April 15 Filing Deadline is Just Six Days Away
Texas CPAs Share Tax Tips to Help Last-Minute Filers

DALLAS — Taxpayers who haven’t filed their taxes yet have just six days left to complete their tax returns. Completing your tax return at the last minute can sometimes lead to mistakes. The Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants has five suggestions to help taxpayers prepare an error-free tax return.

1. Consider e-filing. Over 73 million Americans filed their tax returns electronically last year — and there’s good reason. Your return is checked for accuracy by IRS computers, and corrections are made automatically. If you expect a tax refund, you’ll get it far faster – in half the time it takes those who file by mail. Plus, you avoid the long lines at the post office this year.

2. A missing or incorrect Social Security number is one of the most common errors taxpayers make. List the correct Social Security number for yourself, your spouse, and any dependents.

3. Double-check to be certain the amounts listed on all 1099 forms and W-2 statements match with those listed on your tax return.

4. Use the correct filing status and tax tables when calculating your taxes.

5. Re-check your math. Simple addition and subtraction errors are very common on tax returns. Other common mistakes include transposing numbers and adding instead of subtracting and vice versa. Always double-check the numbers to ensure your accuracy.
