Corpus Christi Professor Receives Outstanding Educator Award
Texas CPA Society Recognizes Del Mar College Educator for
Teaching Excellence and Contributions to the Accounting Profession
DALLAS — Adelfino Palacios, CPA and accounting professor at Del Mar College, was honored recently with the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants’ (TSCPA) 2007 Outstanding Accounting Educator Award.
At a ceremony held Oct. 25 during the TSCPA Accounting Education Conference, Palacios received a plaque and a $1,000 award provided by the TSCPA Accounting Education Foundation.
The statewide TSCPA Outstanding Accounting Educator Awards honor Texans who have demonstrated excellence in teaching and who have distinguished themselves through active service to the accounting profession.
Criteria for judging includes instructional innovation, student motivation, the pursuit of learning opportunities for students, involvement in student and professional accounting organizations, and research accomplishments and publications.
Palacios is involved with students at both the high school and college level. Through the use of humor and props, Palacios uses innovative teaching strategies to keep his students interested and motivated. His implementation of “Readiness Assessment Tests,” or RATs, allow him to pretest students to find their level of readiness for the next chapter. Palacios’s toy rat collection can be accredited to these tests as well!
Several years ago, Palacios implemented the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, as a way to provide hands-on, real world experience to his tax students. He has also helped to implement a series of web-based classes for those who cannot make it into the physical classroom. Palacios can also be credited for his involvement with students at a high school level through coordinating the dual-credit program and making sure the accounting program is consistent with the college level.
Palacios is a member of TSCPA and an active volunteer in the activities of the organization’s Corpus Christi Chapter.
