El Paso CPAs Named Outstanding Chapter
Texas Society of CPAs Honors Local Chapter with Top Award

DALLAS — The Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants (TSCPA) recently honored its El Paso chapter with the award for outstanding chapter.

The prestigious award recognizes chapters that have distinguished themselves through service to their community, the accounting profession, and TSCPA.

Under the leadership of President Robert M. Hanson, CPA, chapter members partnered with the Nonprofit Enterprise Center to assist local nonprofit organizations with accounting and financial issues and problems.

To ensure that area employers are provided with the accounting staff their businesses will require in the future, area CPAs and college accounting students talked about accounting careers with students at an El Paso elementary school, eight area high schools, the University of Texas at El Paso and El Paso Community College. The El Paso chapter also sponsored a golf tournament that provided $1,800 in scholarship money to an outstanding senior accounting student and an outstanding junior accounting student.

To help local CPAs meet their continuing education requirements, the chapter developed a course to cover tax issues that arise with business transactions that pass through border cities in the United States and Mexico. Attendees included attorneys and accountants from the chapter area as well as professionals from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. To ensure that everyone could participate, the chapter provided a Spanish/English translator.

Serving alongside Hanson as chapter officers were Diane V. Smith, CPA, chapter president-elect; Kym Anderson, CPA, vice president; Sidney P. Glandon, CPA, vice president; Robert A. Diaz, CPA, vice president; Eric D. Payne, CPA, secretary; and Martha E. Piekarski, CPA, treasurer. The El Paso chapter has approximately 435 members.
