The auction, held in conjunction with the organization’s annual meeting, raised an additional $20,000 for accounting student scholarships. Texas CPAs give away $120,000 annually in scholarships through the TSCPA Accounting Education Foundation, and the money raised will be used to help even more of the state’s top college accounting students. A flag that flew over the state Capitol on Texas Independence Day and the House speaker’s gavel from the day was the highest bid item, going for $1,000. The second highest item was a flannel memory quilt that went for $950. In addition, the second place bidder of the original quilt offered $950 for a second quilt, which quilt maker Pat Winters agreed to contribute. TSCPA members and local chapters donated all of the auction items. Since 1957, the TSCPA Accounting Education Foundation has distributed almost $5 million to promote, develop and advance accounting education in Texas. In addition to scholarships, the foundation underwrites an annual conference for college professors and provides additional awards, honors, and resources for accounting students and educators.
