At their Jan. 25, 2008 meeting, the TSCPA CPA-PAC Committee approved the endorsement of Sen. Tommy Williams, CPA, for re-election for the Senate seat in District 4.
The district falls within the Houston and Southeast Texas Chapter areas and those chapters have concurred in the endorsement. Counties included in SD 4 are: Chambers, Liberty, Orange and parts of Harris, Jefferson and Montgomery.
Williams, serving his third senate term after three terms in the Texas House, has been a good friend to CPAs during his years as a legislator. He was the senate sponsor of the TSCPA initiated mobility bill during the 2007 session. He is vitally interested in our profession, understanding the high levels of competence and objectivity required to practice as a CPA.
TSCPA presented Williams with a special recognition award in Houston on Jan. 8, 2008, honoring him for his outstanding dedication to the State of Texas and his support of TSCPA legislative initiatives. On March 4, 2008, he faces a former legislator in the Republican primary.
Williams
brings a strong record of business achievements, community involvement and public service to the people of Southeast Texas. He is an outspoken advocate for Texas taxpayers, and a recognized leader in budgetary issues.
He was born and raised in the East Texas town of Marshall. After graduating from Texas A&M with a BBA in Accounting, he began a career in industry and public accounting prior to entering the insurance and financial services field in 1983. He is a member of the Texas Society of CPAs and now serves as president of Woodforest Financial Services, an affiliate of Woodforest National Bank.
He serves on the powerful Senate Finance Committee, Education Committee, Transportation and Homeland Security Committee, and is vice-chair of the Senate's State Affairs Committee. By special appointment of Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, Williams also serves as a member of the Senate Select Committee on Education Reform and Public School Finance, and the Legislative Audit Committee.
On Feb. 8, 2008, Senate Finance Chairman Steve Ogden appointed Williams to Chair the Subcommittee on Property Appraisal and Revenue Caps. This subcommittee will be charged with reviewing the property tax appraisal system and recommending reforms to the next legislature, convening in January of 2009.
Williams and his wife Marsha are the proud parents of two sons, are active community leaders and members of The Woodlands United Methodist Church.
